Identification, Motivation and Support of Mathematical Talents in European School

The identification tool will be introduced and the educator will be trained on how to use it, in either primary or secondary education levels, but specifically of ages 9-18. The next step will be the introduction of motivation ideas and later the support material and teaching. The content is a result of a European Funded project.
 
Objectives

Preilimary Programme
Day 1 - Arrival and Welcome dinner
Day 2 - Opening of the course, market place, introduction to the course, background of the MATHEU Project and its results, cultural event
Day 3 - Identification and Motivation, elements from results of the project MATHEU, cultural event
Day 4 - Workshops for support to students, elements from results of the project MATHEU, cultural event
Day 5 - Workshops for support to students, practice and feedback, cultural event.
Day 6 - Presentations, evaluation, certificate award ceremony and cultural event
Day 7 - Departures
 
Content
1. The concept of ladders. Description and aims of the course. Methods to identify gifted students. Methods to make mathematics pleasant to students using mathematical games and toys.
2. Polynomials. History, techniques, applications.
3. Mathematical Induction. History, methods of discovery, methods of validating a formula.
4. Geometry. History, techniques, discussion and comparison of several different proofs of classical theorems, applications to real life problems.
5. Various topics from a) Inequalities, b) Games and c) Invariants.
